The End Marks The Start

03/27/2015 – This day marked the end of PT 138, ‘Teaching in Physical Therapy’. On the other hand, it was the start of a life-long journey of dedication and commitment to teach other people. As part of the culminating activity, we were asked to implement our instructional design. We had first-hand experience on teaching our client, which in our case was the CAMP support group.

The session was not perfect but it went very well. Our group really prepared for the activity. We had PowerPoint presentation and handouts to help us in discussing joint protection techniques and low back prevention. The teaching session was divided into two parts. The first part was for the joint protection techniques. The group demonstrated the proper way of moving by efficiently lifting objects and using cleaning materials such as brooms and mops. The next part was for the exercises to prevent low back pain. The group executed the session very smoothly. Activities were appropriate in meeting the objectives. The demonstrations were done in an organized manner as well. The group monitored the progress of the learners by often asking if they have any questions about the topic. The group also ensured that return demonstrations were accurate by providing feedback.

Some weak points and how they can be improved are as follows. The group could have engaged the learners more by establishing rapport at the beginning of the session. This could be done by relating the importance of the session to their work right from the start and getting to know each participant. Also, practical schedules on when to do the exercises could have been provided. This is to give the learners a realistic approach on following the exercises. The group should also be careful in using jargons the next time.

The teaching activity was fun and fulfilling. It gave us the taste of how it is going to be in the future. As novice practitioners, it is not a surprise to commit mistakes. What is more important is that we recognize them and learn from them. This is an experience I will never forget.
