Today we had three activities.
The first was yoga. That activity reminded us what it’s like
to be a learner. It also provided a demonstration of an effective teacher. It was
my second time to try yoga so with previous experience and the comprehensive
instructions, the poses came easily.
After the yoga session, we reviewed our previous video
portfolio. We evaluated ourselves as a teacher. Honestly, I don’t normally
watch my videos after submitting them. Even though only a couple of months have
passed, I’ve realized that we have gained so much experience and learnings
since then.
The last activity was role play. I expected it to be like
our other role plays with simple simulated patients. However I was stunned that
our cases were mostly cognitive problems which we don’t tackle a lot. In our
case, aphasia, I had a really challenging time thinking of what to do. It was
convenient that we were grouped so we got different inputs in the planning.
When I got home and started reading up for the exams the
next day, I came upon a lecture we had regarding how to handle patients with
aphasia. I deeply regret not remembering any of it during the role playing
session. I probably would have performed better if I did remember it.
These activities have helped me realize that yes, I’ve
already improved since last semester, and yes, there are still a lot of things I
can still work on since improving is a continuous process. The need to broaden
my knowledge regarding impairments and how to handle patients with them is a
priority now. This day also made me appreciate the need to reflect on our
previous actions, even in matters beyond the profession (just like in reviewing
a blog entry before posting it).
