March 16, 2015 was
another day of learning to be a better future physical therapist (PT).
In the morning, we
critiqued our videos from PT 153. For me, it was a self – reflection activity.
I got to evaluate myself as a teacher, where I lacked or excelled. As a future
PT, it is important for me to always self – evaluate. Through this, I can
immediately correct my mistakes and thus give the best for my patients. The
activity also taught me not to rely on the evaluation of others; evaluation
should start within me.
We then had a Yoga
class to help us understand more about group teaching. I applaud the professor
for being a very effective teacher. She employed a good student–to–professor
ratio. We were comfortable because she pointed out at first that we can rest if
we can’t do a certain pose then just catch up later on. As a future PT, it is
important for my patient to feel comfortable for learning to take place. Like
the professor, I should also give demonstrations and feedback with appropriate
timing and fading.
Finally, we had a
role – playing wherein we were given patients with different conditions and
were told to instruct them with some PT techniques. This was my favorite of the
three because I got to incorporate the treatment courses with teaching;
however, the case presentations were not what I expected them to be. As a
future PT, I will experience situations wherein I will be caught off guard by
my patient’s presentation; thus, I should be resourceful; I shouldn’t be boxed
in certain teaching strategies because no strategy is applicable to all. I have
to utilize all means, may it be visual, verbal or others, for the betterment of
my patient’s understanding.
