PT: Pwedeng Teacher

Last Monday, we did video critiquing, yoga, and role playing in our PT 138 class.

Video critiquing taught me to always reflect on my actions as a future PT. There are times when I think that what I did was fine but after watching it again, there were things that I think I should have done better. Also, in teaching certain exercises, what is being taught influences the manner of teaching.

During yoga, I learned, based on observation, how to facilitate learning when teaching psychomotor skills to a group of learners. We should provide demonstrations as well as verbal cues. As the session proceeds, gradual lifting off the cues progresses learning. It also requires repetition for the skill for it to be more automatic. Providing feedback to the clients/patients involves correcting their posture, manually guiding them, etc. And as with all the interventions, clear instructions should be provided. Also, the environment should be set-up to maximize learning.

In the role playing activity, I learned that there are different ways in dealing with different patients/clients. Even if they have the same diagnosis or they present with the same signs and symptoms, they must be treated individually. I also learned that as a PT, I should keep my composure at all times whether the situation may be funny or frustrating. As future physical therapists, we have to ensure effective communication for effective teaching and learning. In a way, patients are teaching us to be “patient” (having patience) too.

Overall, I enjoyed the activities for the day. Although we had a hectic schedule that day, I was able to learn a lot of things while having fun. A whole day lecture makes me feel tired even though I was just sitting down. But that day, it felt fulfilling as a learner.
