I am never the instructor-type
of person; I am merely a learner and a listener. However, as I go through
the different courses of Physical Therapy, I learned to be more than who I used
to be.
I never expected that the first day of 138 would be tiring and more
enjoyable compared to the previous subjects in our 4th year. We were actively engaged in yoga, role-playing,
and video critiquing. These activities gave me different views to ponder on; it
made me realize what a Physical Therapist really is and that I am learning to
appreciate my profession even more.
Yoga did not just teach me the importance of using simple and clear
instructions and demonstrations when teaching a client the proper execution of
an exercise. It also taught me the importance of conditioning my body as part
of my profession. Role-playing
challenged me on how to properly deal with different kinds of patients which I
will encounter in the future. It also made realize that physical therapists
should be resilient and confident. Lastly, video critiquing gave me a view of
myself in the past; it made me aware of how I am still lacking and how I am so focused
with my checklist that the session itself is becoming scripted.
I learned that knowledge of the patients’ medical condition is not
enough to treat them. It is vital to understand their situation and how their
condition greatly affects them.
Furthermore, our role as physical therapists has never been confined
to treating our patient’s condition. It is always beyond medical care; we need
to teach them how to function optimally and independently.
