"To understand others is to have knowledge;
To understand oneself is to be enlightened;
To conquer others requires strength;
To conquer oneself is even harder."
- Lao Tze
This quote was also the opener used in the first module for PT 138. Going into retrospect, I realize how it actually reflects my experience of the first day of class.
To understand others is to have knowledge. Indeed this statement was true when we had our role playing activity. From what I have observe from the performance of the other groups, as well as ours, it is very important to know your learner well. It is not enough to know techniques and strategies to use in order to do what has to be done but also we need to know how these could be effectively used for the client.
To understand oneself is to be enlightened. This one describes the video critiquing activity wherein we watched our old ACBT videos. The most important insight I got from this activity is self-reflection. Sometimes we need to be able to see how we conduct ourselves in order for us to improve. In terms of teaching, I realized how evaluation is crucial in determining our effectiveness as a PT. People come to us in order to alleviate their conditions therefore it is our duty to ensure that we achieve this.
To conquer others requires strength. By others, I meant challenges and something new such as yoga. For a learner it is important that the teacher is well knowledgeable since it gives the learner confidence in performing the activity. This may be a helpful tip in the future. Going an extra mile and experiencing first hand the things you teach your clients can help one grow as a professional.
Lastly, to conquer oneself is even harder. I know that all these insights may not directly translate into practice immediately but with time and perseverance nothing is impossible. We may fail many times along the way but we should always focus on improving. We should never give up on ourselves.
