03/16/2015 – Who would have thought that the first day in class
could be as fun as our first day in Teaching? Our first activity was to critique
our videos on teaching ACBT. It was done to let us experience how did we go
through our teaching process. The next part of the activity was yoga. We were
taught different poses by our yoga master, Ma’am Mia. For the second half, we
were asked to role play teaching in different scenarios.
All of those activities bring a certain message for us as a Physical Therapist. If there is one
thing common in all of the activities, that would be the importance of
communication. Communication plays a very huge role in teaching since it is your
way of connecting to your learner. If you cannot establish good rapport with
your learner, then your teaching attempt would most likely to fail. Another
important learning is that we, as Physical Therapist, should know the
background of our client because it will determine our teaching style and
approach. We should know certain information like how much knowledge does our
client have about his/her condition or the client’s clinical presentation.
Also, having been able to experience how it was to be a learner, I was able to grasp
the two sides of the coin. I was able to know the things a teacher should provide a learner such as feedback, manual guidance, and a facilitating environment.
All of the learning I have mentioned translates into one clear
goal, and that is manifestation of those learning in our PT practice. As PTs,
we should be able to have a deep sense and understanding of the teaching
process together with its factors especially that our profession would entail a lot of
teaching.
