Learning Teaching

I never once thought of becoming a teacher. I have always said that I would never take teaching as a profession. That being said, I surprisingly enjoyed my first day in a teaching class.

For our first class in PT 138: Teaching in Physical Therapy, we had three activities. A role playing activity in which we strategized ways of effectively teaching exercises to different kinds of clients; video critiquing, in which we re-watched a video of us teaching a client an exercise and reflected on how teaching was accomplished; and a yoga session.

The role playing activity was the best activity of the day. I learned a lot from observing my classmates plan and execute their strategies for teaching.  My role being a patient, I saw first-hand how my classmates would sometimes have difficulties in getting the patient to follow instructions. I realized then that to be an effective teacher, you have to know your learner and you have to be able to adapt well to their learning style.

Video critiquing was a good introspective activity. Seeing for myself how I was able to teach the simulated client was motivating. It made me think that I can be a good teacher. It also made me think of how even before this course, though I still can improve, I am already capable of thinking effective ways of facilitating learning.

The Yoga activity was a new experience for me. Reflecting on how the different poses were taught, I would say that Ma’am Mia was a very good teacher. We were able to execute the poses albeit not always perfectly, which was okay. I have found that the use of demonstration will always be an effective method of learning for me.

Overall, the activities for the day were all good ways for us to grasp the concepts of effective ways of teaching. Even if I don’t like teaching because I never thought I can teach effectively, I am now confident that with the knowledge I have, and with more practice and exploration, I can be an effective teacher.
