Teaching and Learning

Last March 16, Monday, we had our first day of classes for our PT 138 Teaching in Physical Therapy class. We were welcomed by a number of activities. The activities we participated in were yoga, video critiquing, and role-playing.

The yoga session was part of teaching psychomotor skills. During the session, we were taught how to do different yoga poses. In this activity, we were the learners. This experience would be useful in our practice by making us aware of what it feels like to be learners. This would help us know how to deal with clients when we teach them various exercises.

In video critiquing, we were asked to evaluate our video of teaching a client how to do an ACBT exercise. It focused on how the learning took place and what strategies we used in order to facilitate learning. Learning about these strategies to facilitate learning would help us in teaching our clients. We would know which strategies would be effective and efficient for our clients and us.

For the role-playing part, we were divided into 6 groups with 4-5 members each and were tasked to do a skit. Some played the roles of simulated patients and caregivers while some acted as therapists. We had to deal with patients with different medical conditions in each case. This activity was very informative. It gave us an insight of what our therapy sessions would look like. Because of this, we would know what to do when dealing with clients who have these medical conditions.

The activities that we did were not only exciting, but also functional for our roles as physical therapists. The understanding that we gained regarding teaching and learning from the said activities would be beneficial when we deal with our clients in the future.
