This was not the first time I saw the movie Freedom Writers; I watched it during my 2nd year in High School and loved everything about the movie. However, I did not learn to appreciate it and never knew how it would have an impact in my profession until now.
Re-watching the movie gave me new perspectives, I started to appreciate every detail and scene of the movie because it greatly correlates to my future profession. Starting from learning to love one’s profession that the teacher, Mrs. Gruwell, portrayed, I realized that if I love and enjoy being a Physical Therapist, no matter how difficult and tiring it is, I will still be able to give my 101% to my every client and show compassion while working with him/her. Loving my profession would also mean that I wouldn’t mind making sacrifices for my patients. Serving them unconditionally and believing in their capabilities would be my primary regard as I practice Physical Therapy.
The movie also made me realize that my profession is not just about treating my patients’ condition and helping them improve. It’s also about helping them regain trust in themselves. It’s about changing their outlook from feeling helpless and hopeless to becoming optimistic and confident. Furthermore, qualities such as perseverance and patience that Mrs. Gruwell professed has helped me realize that believing not only in your patients’ abilities but also in yourself (that you could help them and impact their lives) would definitely help them function optimally.
As I become a physical therapist, I someday would like to see my patients grow. I would like to see them use their abilities in helping their fellow PWDs. I want to see them give hope and inspire other PWDs in regaining their confidence and independence.
