The Art of Teaching

“To get respect you have to give it”. As the line implies, the movie “Freedom Writers” revolved around the value of respect and how it affects the teacher-learner relationship. The main character Erin Gruwell showed that respect is something you must earn and is something that will help develop the connection between a teacher and a learner.

Respecting and knowing the learners’ individual story is one of the key concepts in the movie. With the movie depicting the struggles and conflict faced by an ordinary teacher in dealing with his/her students/learners; it showed the importance of having a strong determination and dedication in facilitating the teaching process in order to impart the learning/s you want your learners to acquire. Likewise, physical therapist or any other health professionals should not just know the case of their client but should also be involved with deep understanding, strong sense of dedication and lots of patience. And with the intention of using all the knowledge that they have and doing the best that they could in achieving the goals of their client.

Just as shown in the movie, being a teacher was not an easy task especially if the learners are not motivated to learn. There are certain situations that can be way beyond our control and way far in comparison to our expectations as a teacher but no matter what, a teacher must not give up and should strive to continue. With this idea in mind, a teacher should be flexible enough to provide a variety of teaching strategies to be able to know the most suitable to the context of the learners. It is an art of teaching vital for every physical therapist in every teaching session.
