After making our own instructional designs, we implemented our consolidated ID last March 25, 2015. We taught a dance for CTS-AA adult clients for their wellness activity. We were also tasked to conduct their warm up and cool down activities. We were also to help in guarding some of the clients.
I was really excited for this activity and nervous at the same time. However, the clients were very accommodating and cooperative that they made it very easy for us. Somehow, we were also able to build some rapport with them because they were very friendly. Some were even the ones who approached us first. They were sharing their stories to us and making jokes with us. Fortunately, they were also laughing with us, and not at us.
Before we met the clients, we were having trouble in making the dance steps since we were not sure if the steps were still appropriate for them. We only got a general picture from the paper given to us, the interns, and sir Chris. But we were still not sure whether it would be too easy or too hard for them as we had never seen them yet prior to the teaching proper. Fortunately, the dance steps matched their capabilities and we did not have to modify on the spot.
During the teaching activity, I think that our demonstration for the dance was good. They were able to follow the dance steps, although some had difficulties. However, we could still improve on our spacing and the providing of verbal cues. For our warm up and cool down activities, I think that, generally, the choice of activities were okay. But, we could still improve on modifying parts of the activities when it seemed that it was becoming inappropriate for the clients.
Because we were so in-the-zone during the wellness class, there were times that we forgot that we were there as teachers. We danced with them but we were not that conscious in providing feedback during the dance. I tried to provide a feedback when it was my turn to guard and observe. However, I became hesitant approaching them since we just met and it still seemed awkward for me. As a teacher, regardless of how long you have known your patients/clients, you should assert your role while still being sensitive so you could do your job.
From the feedback that we got from the clients, we were able to accomplish one of our goals which was to increase their RPE. We were able to target their cardiovascular endurance during the activity which was the purpose of their wellness class. However, we forgot to say our rationale at the beginning. I think we could also still improve on wrapping the session up as we just clapped and we did not summarize what happened during the session and encourage them to do wellness activity outside the clinic.
For me, the activity was fulfilling. The fieldwork really made the course end with a bang. I went home smiling feeling that I did something that was of significance that day. I was able to experience teaching and interacting with real clients. I was also able to observe how the interns manage patients/clients. They were really good at it. Sometimes, I wonder if that is an innate thing because it seems so natural for them.
The whole session made me want to improve more as a future PT. The clients inspired me to strive more as they are striving more to help themselves. They are doing their part so I should do my part as well. It is a two-way thing relationship. As the song says, "Ang isang pag-ibig, ay parang lansangan na pang-dalawahan. Kaya't sa ating awit, tayo ay magbigayan."
