One of the reasons
I enjoy the subject “Teaching in Physical therapy” is the fact that it makes
use of varied strategies every session. Going to class did not feel like I am
performing something part of my routine. Movie day was definitely out of the
ordinary for us 4th year students.
The movie
“Freedom Writers” was great and quite eye opening. I saw how a teacher can
greatly influence his/her students. Through the movie, I realized that teaching
is not just about feeding your students information that they have to learn. It
entails facilitation of learning by making use of strategies that would help
make the lesson relevant to your students.
At first
I’d say building rapport would be very necessary. You have to gain your
students’ trust so that they will be receptive of the lesson. A good way of
doing that is by knowing who your students are. Ask what is important to them,
what they need to learn and how they learn best. Once this established, we can
be creative and use different means to promote the best learning possible.
Through the
small group discussion following the film viewing, I learned that I need to appreciate
what I do so that I could make my clients love what they are doing. I need to
find the relevance of what I do, to make my clients see the relevance of what
they are to do. I need to know who I am, so that I know what I can do for my
future clients. As a future therapist, there will be times where treatment
sessions would be difficult but I have remain passionate about my work so that
despite the difficulty I would continue trying my very best to be of great help
to my patients.
