Movie Day: Freedom Writers, Day 3

Our movie day turned out to be one of the most inspiring things I have ever seen in my life. We watched the Freedom Writers which follows the school life of a teacher and her students in LA where gang riots were rampant.  Long story short, Ms. G, the teacher, never gave up on her students and so inspired the change in them to do better.

What really struck me is the fact that Ms. G believed, right from the start, that her students have the ability to change and learn. I realized that it is important that we should never doubt the capabilities of our students, that there is always a capacity for improvement. However, there is always a limit and we should know when to stop pushing.  In any case, giving up is not an option, there is always a new strategy to be used and we just have to think of it. Like Ms. G, she used multiple strategies to get her students’ attention. She used books that the students could relate to such as The Diary of Anne Frank, brought them to museums, introduced them to Holocaust survivors, and even made them empathize with each other using a single line. It was all about how we facilitate learning in a way that the students will be able to enjoy.

As future PTs, I believe that there will come a time where we will encounter a difficult situation like what Ms. G had. I think that it would be frustrating and challenging yet we should always remember that we are in this field because of the people who needs our help. There is always a way and it is up to us go forth courageously and patiently, an instrument of CHANGE.
