Teachers can either shape you into something you never thought you could be, or they can leave you spiraling down without nothing to hold on to. Their influence on our lives either make or break us. It all depends on how our teachers see us and treat us. This was very evident in the movie Freedom Writers.
It was a very interesting movie and how it is a story based on real-life individuals made it all the more alive to us. It made me think about how Ms. Gruwell loves teaching and the kids she taught in English class. She shows us how her passion and dedication to her job as a teacher not only encompasses the classroom but the personal lives of her students. She was genuinely concerned about their welfare and she made me realize how we, as future teachers, have in our hands the capacity to make or break a client.
It is not only what we teach that is important but also how we relate with our clients. We have to see them as a whole person and not just something that we have to treat or educate. We need to see beyond the person that we can see at present because these people have had different factors which contribute to the "now." I think it is valuing the person enough and showing them that can boost their motivation because they will see we believe that they can do more and as a result, they may try to do better and better each time. The way we value them may facilitate their growth and learning more than just the information presented to them.
