Last March 20, we watched a movie The Freedom Writers. After
the film, we were divided into groups where we share our insights about the
film.
There were a lot of things I was able to learn from the
movie. One is I should always build rapport with the learner before the actual
teaching, because having a good relationship with the learner is essential to
effective teaching. It is important to make them feel they are not hopeless and
that someone believes they can learn. The movie was able to show how critical
the role of a teacher is. An effective teacher can change the lives of their
learners if they are successful in delivering what they want to impart.
It is also important to match the learning strategy with how
the learner sees things and try to incorporate things that interest them in the
activities to get their attention. The teaching should also be meaningful for
the learner so they can find it useful. It is important that we also address
the attitude of the learner because it usually becomes a limiting factor if
ignored.
In teaching a client, it is important to make them feel
empowered. How can they believe they are capable of learning if we, the teachers,
will not believe in them? Making them feel that we will not give up on them can
give them motivation to continue learning. It is also important that we are
flexible in making plans as some strategies will not always work which will
require us to explore other strategies that will best serve the client’s
interest. Lastly, it is important to have patience since there will always be
times when our client will not participate at the start no matter how hard we
try.
